Are you sure that the item shown is not the ethernet connection? Hover your mouse pointer over the icon and see what it says.

And pop into the device manager and see if anything has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark alongside it.

Have you tried hovering your mouse over the icon and right clicking it, then select diagnose and repair ?
How about going into device manager and uninstalling any drivers contained within NETWORK ADAPTERS, then reboot your system? It might be worth downloading and installing the latest driver for your vodaphone dongle. Try going into services and check to see if NETWORK LOCATION AWARENESS has started and whether or not its manual, automatic or disabled. Last but not least have you gone into CONTROLPANEL/NETWORK AND INTERNET/NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER then select VIEW STATUS and DIAGNOSE which should give you the chance to reset your wireless connection. From the NETWORK AND SHARE CENTER next select MANAGE NETWORK CONNECTIONS and check your local area connection to make sure its disabled. Well thats just a few things to try which i hope helps. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Bengie, have tried turning off anti-virus (as it says) already, which is difficult with Norton360, it made no difference but cheers anyway.

You are connecting to the net via a separate USB dongle?
I suspect the other 'not connected' may be the laptop's own built in wireless card not connecting to neighbours routers that it's seeing. Hence the message your getting. Do you have a button to turn off a built in wireless card ? |

I quite agree kremmen, i sent a private message to tonyw on the 2/8/10 saying the same thing however he has yet to reply.
It would be interesting to know how this form of connection is perceived by windows network center (ie VPN, dial up, etc ) as todate i have'nt looked into it what with not using this technology myself).
