When I am typing an e-mail, sometimes I mistakenly hit the wrong key and the character on the screen changes. Not every letter is affected. If I type an apostrophe, I get a capital E with a slash over it as in the French language. It also happens when I type a question mark. It doesn't happen when I use Word, only in my Windows Mail.
My son has tried to erase the French language from the computer but that didn't help. Does anyone know what is happening here. Many thanks. |

I assume you are using Outlook, if so:
First check that your language is selected, Control Panel / Region and Language / English (United Kingdom). Open Outlook then: File / Options / Mail / Spelling and Autocorrection / Untick "Enforce accented uppercase in French" / Ok

Thanks for your reply Bengie.
I tried what you suggested with no luck. First, I don't have "Options" under "file". However there is one under Tools, which I tried. There was nothing that resembled any of the areas you suggested to go into. I tried them all. I'm using Windows Mail, which I understand used to be Outlook Express. I suspect that I'm accidently hitting a certain key that is causing the problem. When I begin to type my message it's usually fine but somewhere into the typing, it starts up. When I re-boot, it goes back to the correct way.....sometimes......other times I have to shut down and come back later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

What country are you in and what version of windows do you have (ie xp,vista,7 )?
If you switch to say notepad/wordpad while windows mail is still open do you still get french lettering when typing in either pad? Additional data- If memory serves me well the left side Alt+shift varies the language if its avaliable.

I'm in Canada. I tried to figure out which version of Vista I'm in but I can't find anything that tells me.
It doesn't change the entire page, just all the apostrophe's and the question marks. It replaces them with a capital E with a slash over it. All other keys type correctly. I have the computer set to US English for the language. There isn't such a setting for Canadian English. I'm really at a loss as to what this might be and so is everyone else that I have talked to. I figured that this forum is seen by the best technical experts in the industry so I thought someone might have seen it before. Sure would appreciate any input. Just found out I'm running Vista with sevice pack 2 Last edited by nurseev; 08-01-2010 at 04:45 AM. |

Have a look at these and see if they help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258826 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927824 Also you could try: Go to the Control panel and select Regional and Language Options. Under Keyboards and Languages select Change keyboards. It will show the langauges that are setup and under advanced key settings the shortcut key to change bewteen them. You can change them here.

Thank you to Avatar and to Peterg for your input into my problem.
This is what I did after reading your replies: Peterg.....I went into the regional and language options as you suggested and removed the Canadian French from the computer. I will have to wait and see if this fixes my problem. I sure hope so. Avatar:.......In regional and language options, my format is set to "English - United Kingdon" which I changed to "English- United States" The location was set to Canadian English and Canadian French. I removed the Canadian French. I have the confident feeling that my problem is fixed with these changes. I will post in a couple of days to let you know if it has happened again or not. Fingers crossed. Again, many thanks to everyone who has replied. |
