19 essential get-started tips for Windows Vista

These are our picks for the 19 things you should try when you first start using Windows Vista.
Published on 29 January 2007

From the moment you start using Windows Vista, you'll find a lot of new things to get used to: new programs, new layout, new ways of doing things. Some are great, some are confusing, some are just very well hidden. These are my picks for the 19 things you should try when you first start using Windows Vista - do you think differently? Let me know in the comments, or drop me a line.

1. Use Flip3D

Using Flip3D

Okay, so it's hardly essential, but it's still one of the first things you should try: it's just a neat way to show off that snazzy new interface. Hold down the Windows key and your keyboard and hit Tab to spool through them.

2. Fix a photo - and automatically back it up

One of the most useful new programs, Photo Gallery enables you to automatically import and organise your photos. Click Fix and you can crop out unsightly backgrounds, remove red-eye and adjust the lighting, too. But the most impressive feature is that it automatically backs up every photo: press CTRL and R and it'll restore it just as it was when you first imported it.

3. Launch any program instantly

Want to open something even faster? Hold down the Windows key and press a number from 1 to 9, and it'll open the corresponding entry in the Quick Start menu next to the Start button.

Windows and 1 opens the shortcut next to the button (usually Show Desktop), Windows and 2 opens the second shortcut (usually Flip 3D) and so on. To add or rearrange shortcuts, just click and drag them.

4. Save time browsing your folder

Favourite links

Are you regularly digging through your hard drive to open the same folder? Click and drag it into the Favorite Links pane on the left of every Windows Explorer window to keep it just one click away.

5. Get more from your laptop

If you're running Windows Vista on a mobile PC, hold down the Windows key and press X to open up the new Mobility Center. It gives instant access to controls for the battery, wireless signal, external displays and more.

6. Add a gadget to your desktop

That new strip on the side of your desktop is more useful thank you might think: click the plus symbol at the top, then click Get more gadgets online to view the 370+ (and counting) free downloads that add instant new features to your desktop - everything from BBC radio to currency conversion. You can drag and drop them on to the desktop, too - the Weather gadget, for example, is actually more useful when used like this because it gives you a three-day forecast.

7. Make search even easier

The built-in search can find things even if you don't remember what they're called. Open your Documents window, click Organise > Folder and Search options, select the Search tab and click "use natural language search." You can now search for things like "photo taken last week" or "email sent from Dave" and it'll bring back all matching results.

8. Connect to other laptops

If you've got a wireless laptop, you can quickly create a network with others by opening up Meeting Space. Create a display name, click Start a new meeting, and see if says Using: Ad Hoc Wireless Network on the bottom right. If not, click Options and tick the appropriate box. Then all you've got to do is enter a password and click the green button to create it. Other laptops nearby can join by loading Meeting Space and clicking Join a meeting near me. Once in, click Add a handout to share a file or Share a program or desktop to - wait for it - share a program or your PC's desktop.

9. Protect your files

Backing up your files is given the importance it deserves in Windows Vista - particularly compared to the crude and mostly-hidden tool in Windows XP - and it's ever so easy to use. Open Backup and Restore Center from the Start menu, hit Back Up Files and choose if you want to back up photos, email, music and more: they'll be automatically saved to your choice of backup device. Got Windows XP backups you want to add to your Windows Vista PC? You can import them by using this tool.

10. Get the old power button back

One of the neater new features in Windows Vista is that the Power button on the Start menu doesn't turn your PC off - it puts it into a new low-power state, so it's all but deactivated but is much quicker to start up. If you don't want to use this - or you've got an older PC that doesn't support it properly - you can change it by digging deep in the configuration options. Search for "power" in the Start Menu and clicking Power Options. Click Change plan settings, then Change advanced power settings and expand the entry for Power buttons and lid. Expand Start menu and power button entry and click on Sleep to pick another option from the drop-down menu.

11. Zoom in on your desktop

Desktop zoom

Open any Windows Explorer window, select an icon, hold down CTRL and scroll your mouse wheel - and your icons will expand before your eyes. It makes them easier to view, and as nearly every icon is a snapshot of the file itself, you can see what's inside them as well.

12. Check your PC's health

Troubleshooting has got a whole lot easier with Windows Vista's reporting tools. Search for "perf" in the Control Panel, click Performance Information and Tools, and then select Advanced tools from the list on the left. Click the Generate a system health report option at the bottom of the list and it'll give you a list of any problems with your PC and what you can do to fix them.

13. View files without opening them

Preview pane

In Windows Explorer, click Organise > Layout and select Preview Pane. You'll get an extra panel on the right of every window that shows you the contents of every file: if it's a PowerPoint presentation, you can click through the slides too.

14. Try Media Center

If you've never used Media Center before, you're in for a treat. Formerly a separate version of Windows, it's now supplied as standard in Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate, giving you a new way to enjoy your photos, music and TV. Hook it up to your telly - which you can do with ease by connecting an Xbox 360 to your home network - and you can easily set up recording of TV programmes and pause live TV.

15. Get your old programs working

Most programs work fine with Windows Vista, but older releases can have problems. If you can't get an older release working properly, search for "compat" in the Control Panel and click on Use an older program with this version of Windows. This will lead you through the required steps - if the program in question worked in Windows XP, check the options for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Run as administrator.

16. Create a search folder

If you're regularly looking for the same thing, save the search. Click the Save Search button in the Explorer window and it'll create a Search Folder of all the items that match that search. To make it even easier to find, select the Searches entry in the Favorite links sidebar on the left, and then drag your newly created folder into the Favorite Links list.

17. Get your old menus back

Are you missing File, Edit, View and the other old stagers from Windows Explorer in Windows XP? Just press Alt and they'll appear.

18. Try tablet input

Another former exclusive now supplied with Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate, tablet input is a new way to control your PC. Handiest for desktop users is the Snipping Tool; open it and you can drag the mouse to snap a screenshot. If you want to replace the keyboard, search for "tablet" in the Start menu and fire up the Tablet PC Input Panel - you'll need a stylus to make the most of it, though.

19. Adjust your security settings

Security settings

As you'll have noticed when using the tips above, the new security features in Windows Vista are very keen, prompting you every time you access a system feature. It's a very effective way of keeping the bad guys out, and I really recommend leaving it in place - but if you fancy your chances at protecting yourself, you can turn it off by clicking your user icon at the top of the Start menu and choosing Turn User Account Control on or off.

I come from the Land of OZ. I subscribe to US Microsoft 'Exploring Windows'. In Vol 95 of July 24, a one-line leader said
'Tips for a well behaved PC'. A click on that and wow!! What a treasure-chest!!
The UK published 'Windows Vista Magazine' should be automatically included as a pre-installed
link in Favourites, with all Vista Software. You Poms have added another 'Crown Jewel'.....can't play cricket, but!
08/08/08 | 12:01

Tried Vista but after two weeks of fighting with the UAC and all the changes I chucked it and the computer and went to the Mac.

I will never look back!!!

In fact I got here trying to fix another user's computer.
19/09/08 | 09:31

you can turn UAC off after You do though you will probably have to restart your computer
19/09/08 | 11:51

thanks
19/09/08 | 09:57

Well some of the things work. Some are not availble to use. Please fix the typos.
19/09/08 | 10:04

Vista still doesn't remember view settings for folders like XP does though, hence sizes of windows when they're re-opened, and whether you want certain folders viewed as 'lists' or 'thumbnails' or 'tiles', etc.
19/09/08 | 10:14

I love Vista 64-bit Ultimate, and, though it's hard to believe, these tips make it even more lovable! Thank you!
19/09/08 | 10:19

Did not help me at all. Don't understand Vista and my new Dell with Vista is infuriating me.
19/09/08 | 10:20

I might try some of the tips, but I really HATE Vista on my 2nd computer. Would like to put XP on it instead. The Image Resizer for XP beats the heck out the one (VSO) for Vista; too slow. I hate the way the updates are done - too cumbersome, and sometimes don't work, plus not all are applicable but says to update every time. Phooey on Vista. To allow permissions that should have been automatic, you have to change in HP Software Update file - at least on the laptop I have. I hope this XP laptop never fails me............
19/09/08 | 10:22

I hate Vista too. I have one of the very early editions and there are TONS of bugs in it. I've had to pay a tech to work on it and shut off bunch of junk to make it work even tiny bit more efficiant.
22/09/08 | 07:16

I like to up grade to Windows Vista
19/09/08 | 10:34

Thanks for posting this article. I have learned some cool new features of Vista that I did not know about.
19/09/08 | 10:35

Your print link is broken - none of the images show up in the 'printer-friendly' format.
19/09/08 | 10:49

great tips. too bad some of these features could not have just been added to xp which i love but there are lots of things about vista i love too.no mac for me - ever!
19/09/08 | 10:55

Great info Thank you
19/09/08 | 11:03

Ok now I am seeing Vista. I had been just stumbling around in here. Thanks
19/09/08 | 11:06

Got Vista with my new computer and I have been impressed a few times the speech is nice for a lot of uses, and here are more I did not know about. THANKS

I have two desktop with XP and just purchased a laptop with Vista. I was reluctant to buy a computer with Vista because of all the war stories about it. However, I found the new OS works just great. I will admit it takes some time to get use to, but the tips in this article make it easier and enjoyable to use. Change is hard for some to come to terms with, change is necessary for improvements in new and better technology. Go Microsoft.
19/09/08 | 11:17

Little tricks of the trade that are helpful.
19/09/08 | 11:26

Magic...Great help..More Please....
19/09/08 | 11:30

Wonderful to know so many useful features. Now I realise the problem lies not in the program itself but in your Singapore personnel assigned to help us.
I emailed the Head, Mr Gan Su Yong, about my problems but did not even get the courtesy of an acknowledgement of my email.
19/09/08 | 11:47

I have tried most of these and they are so fantastic - you can have the "snazzist" looking pc in town, the neatest stuff to work with - all those who say Windows Vista is no good - come on, give it a try, you will love it - Marl
19/09/08 | 11:58

Within topic "2. Fix a photo - and automatically back it up"; at the end of the first sentence, the word (organise) is mispelled; it should be spelled as: (organize.)
20/09/08 | 12:07

This is published in England so you will see several words spelled differently. Check the bottom of the page.

Actually, to the Brits we mispell it!!
20/09/08 | 01:58
Wrong ! It can be spelled both ways - check Collins English Dictionary.
20/09/08 | 12:28
Organize = USA Organise = Australia, UK, New Zealand
21/09/08 | 01:03

Helpful. Thanks.
20/09/08 | 12:22

I don't have the vaguest idea of what you are talking about.
20/09/08 | 12:24

My desktop has XP and my new laptop has Vista. I am getting used to Vista however with the 64 bit I cannot open my exe. files which contain important designs that I need to download to a card and use in my sewing machine. Noone will help me to correct this problem so right now, I am not a happy person!!!
20/09/08 | 12:27

Right click the program icon and select properties. In the Compatability tab select Run this program in compatability mode and select XP or what ever the program was designed for and then select Run this program as an administrator. This should allow you to run almost any old program. It work great for me for a few oldies.
25/09/08 | 03:44

I have XP but bought a new Dell and was forced to take Vista. I have seen very little improvement in my over 25 years of computing.
20/09/08 | 12:34

Good article and some help, now if we can just switch off the nag "Click here if you started this program" Who do you think started it, I'm the only one here? There are still non network stand alone computers and they have users.
20/09/08 | 12:39

I didnt know about some things yet. Quite useful!
20/09/08 | 12:41

I always have a lot of windows open. Flip 3D is just awesome and I never saw anyone use it before.
20/09/08 | 01:06

I learned a lot from this article. Thanks.
20/09/08 | 01:10

Exellent article, I'll be sure to send a link to all the Vista haters out there that have never used it and claiming that Vista took away all their features from XP.
20/09/08 | 01:18

OMG, this is awesomer. I'd never seen PC b4efore, only max and linix. This Vistas is way, way better. Blieive me you! Theres like 3d stuff, and even 2d stuff. Im FLIPPin for it!

20/09/08 | 01:26

20/09/08 | 02:01

What a joke. Any hint on how to return my desktop to the way it was before I tried this "tip"?
20/09/08 | 02:04

..."VISTA" is one of the things that make it a joy to go on the "PC". ,for whatever reason.
It is just "Wonderful" and very entertaining. So easy to use.
Could not be without it.
THANKS !!!...FOR THE WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
20/09/08 | 02:10

I have used Vista since the Beta first hit the net and bought it the first day out. I love it and can't figure why everyone is dragging their heels on it. But that's the way it's been since 3.1 The tips were useful. There were a couple I didn't know about. Thanks!
20/09/08 | 02:11

I'm a PC! Yeah! Thanks for the tips the great tips!
20/09/08 | 02:42

If only MS shipped prizes from Live Games as often as they release betas...
20/09/08 | 03:57

Handy; I'll keep on working on Vista and hoping someday it will be as good as XP!
20/09/08 | 04:01

I'm a PC Also! And I Love Vista, Especially the 64bit, and for the ones with problems just install the SP1 and you will see that Vista is the BEST OS You Could have at the moment! It takes a little bit of resources, it takes a little longer to boot than XP, but after boot you cant compare it with XP, its really stable and fast, you just tave to keep your pc up to date! use the ready boost even if you have 8gb of memory like me, you can notice how fast it opens the programs with the Flash (Ready Boost), i know that some people says it doesnt do nothing, but my pc has a 5.9 score in all components and i notice the diference!!
20/09/08 | 04:04

Nineteen fluffy things Vista can do!! Come on, you guys really wrote Vista for the Mac, didn't you! Fess UP!
20/09/08 | 04:12

Vista is the biggest piece of crap that was ever created. Microsoft never heard of KISS, "keep it simple stupid" The software is to serve me, not create more places for me to dig out simple functions like in XP. Printers will not work properly, mice slow down, items that are supposed to to be Vista compatable are NOT. Vista displays folders like it wants not what I want. Control panel functions are insane. Vista go to hell.
20/09/08 | 04:44

Must be the user as i have had no trouble out of vista. maybe you should learn what you are doing first of all.
20/09/08 | 05:34
Sounds like "a bad workman always blames his tools"
20/09/08 | 12:31
PEBKAC

Don't you think?
22/09/08 | 09:20

I bet a few of these comments are fake. I dont find these tricks that fantastic, and I cant see 20/20 people feel that way. Guess this comment will be deleted soon
20/09/08 | 04:54

20/09/08 | 08:52

"muncho" no existe. La palabra es "mucho."
21/09/08 | 12:36

Easier way to change compatability...just right click on the desktop icon, or .exe anywhere, /properties/compatibility. I love Vista. Now that the drivers are out there there is no reason not to upgrade.
20/09/08 | 09:08

This system is realy crap

Some things I didn't know about - thanks.
20/09/08 | 01:20

I think vista is great,as a novice to computers the tip's were easy to follow and under stand, some of the comments made must be from people that don't like to be informed,or, are so set in the [old way's] they are not able to change
20/09/08 | 01:49

I Was linked to this page through a Microsoft newsletter. I am assuming that other people in the USA are getting this as well. Hope this helps ohters on this side of the pond. About #7. I don't have an ORGANISE tab anywhere on my computer. Here in the USA, we have TOOLS and FOLDER OPTIONS and a SEARCH tab.
20/09/08 | 02:21

Well, I live in the USA and I have an ORGANIZE folder, as does everyone else, right next to views. I think you have your settings different than most folks. Just because a country spells a word differently from the way you are used to doesn't mean that you need to get ignorant about it.
20/09/08 | 02:52

Thx for the snipping tool - LOVE IT!
20/09/08 | 03:04

Thank you very much for info!!!!
20/09/08 | 05:08

Thank you for this article! I'm new to Vista and found many helpful hints in it.
20/09/08 | 06:02

I never knew there was a Vista magazine and I've had my laptop (uses Vista Home Premium) for almost a year. Lots of good info here. Thanks. Now to find a way for me to remember to revisit. LOL
20/09/08 | 06:20

I love the SNIPPING tool, too! And every time I use it, I feel good about not using trees for paper, and not using the ultra-expensive ink. I pay all of my bills online. I used to print each confirmation page out. Now I snip the confirmations, put them in my PAID folder and back it up every night. My printer is rarely used now.
20/09/08 | 07:50

What is this snipping tool. Sounds like something I could certainly use. Tried Microsoft Help but no help.
21/09/08 | 12:31
The Snipping Tool allows you to easily take screenshots of your desktop. You can get to it by typing in 'snip' into the Start Search area of the Start menu.
22/09/08 | 10:45
The snipping tool should also be shown as a tiny icon on the left-hand side of your Taskbar. It's a great feature. Much better than the old one on Win '95...
03/10/08 | 11:24

I think a lot of people do not give Vista a chance. With everyone bashing it everywhere, they try it for an hour and say the hell with it. But if you spend some time with it, you can get it to work really well to your liking. I found the book "Vista for Dummies" helpful. And since I have to look at it for 9 hours a day, I like having the handsome AERO look. Now everything else looks clunky.
20/09/08 | 07:54

Thank heaven. Finally some useful tips about Vista. Keep them coming.
20/09/08 | 08:09

Needs to be more basic for me. My first computer!
20/09/08 | 09:02

Thanks. I've been using Vista for a year already but didn't know these things.

I am so very sorry that I bought this computer with Vista and gave my older computer to a friend that had XP. The microsoft XP. to me, was very user friendly. It seems to me that almost every other week I get patches for security from Microsoft because they haven't run Vista through all of the tests that XP has been through.

Sorry, but for an older person these tips do not make any sense.

Your age has nothing to do with it ! Excuses, excuses

I like the Voice Recognition program that comes with all versions of Vista, even Vista Basic.Works great and would be a great asset for people whom don't like to type as you can use it in email as well.
Vista really is great, have been using it for 10 mths now.

I am an older person and I say a big thankyou. I just upgraded to Vista and this has been a great help for me. I am now armed and dangerous and ready to enjoy my vista experience.
21/09/08 | 01:14

I'll just keep using XP.

Just installed Vista today. Excited to try out these excellent suggestions. Thanks!

Wow, some good info, should be on the commercials of some of Vista's "good" points.
21/09/08 | 03:26

This is what we need.
21/09/08 | 03:43

but still its sucks

but still its sucks

vista sucks, the only useful tip is 'how to get your old XP menus back', which shows you you did a crappy job. Trying to make everything shiny and new, you forgot usability. New isn't always better. I'm back to XP and I'm really sorry for paying 100$ on my poor vista premium.

great stuff

I had someone flaunt to me that OS X had the quickview feature, and he sure loved it when I told him I didn't think Vista did. HA! Shows him Excellent article, this is important to show people.
22/09/08 | 09:24

There are a few things that I didn't know about, but Vista still sucks.
22/09/08 | 02:01

this is a strong help, thanks
22/09/08 | 03:11

Vista works fine. I've got two desktops running Vista. It's just different from XP. I think it's probably better.
22/09/08 | 04:20

This is great stuff. If Microsoft had supplied more of this type of information with the OS the acceptance of Vista may have been much better. Do not think that most PC users ever figure out all of the features of any OS. I hope you continue to publish more tips and tricks. Thank you so much. By the way, my Vista Ultimate works great.

In regards to item 11. Zoom in on your desktop ... It does not return to original state when you zoom out. Other than that, it's a handy bit of information, as are the other tips. I've been using Bista for more than a year and wouldn't think of returning to XP.

Contra la opinión de muchos, estoy migrando la compañía donde soy IT Manager de XP a Vista. Cada día estoy más convencido que voy en la dirección correcta. Gracias Microsoft!

I have a PC with Windows XP on it and it work good but sometimes a lockup every once in a while, not so much for awhile now.

I have 2 laptops as well, one with XP and the other which is about a year old with Vista on it.

No problems whatsoever with Vista and no lockups either something XP is noted for happening.

Vista is a good thing and I have no complaints at all with this program........

Excellent article.... VISTA is a great operating system and a great improvement over XP. I have been using it for 4 months and have had no problems. I especially like the media center and windows photo gallery, and have made home DVDs using the DVD maker.

pdadana here, thanks for the tips! i have been using windows 2000 at work for years (company machine)I didn't get up graded to xp like everyone else because of special installs so you can imagine my shock when I bought my first pc, a dell with vista home prem. Perhaps since i work with young people i may not fear change as much as some, apparently, do. After installing additional dram on my dell I find vista works great, and after investing in some discovery time i have to say i'm impressed. What's all the racket about xp versus vista anyway? i agree with some other comments, these tips are useful and it would have been nice a year ago. wanting more tips!

Seeing how I've no choice but to use Vista now (oh how I miss XP!!) its helpful to find new simple features... If there are more you better post them or we'll never find out about them.

Vista Rocks! Nice tips. I did know a few of them but this is a nice article to stuff in me Favs folder. Wish I could play with Flip 3D but Home Prem doesn't have it so I just use another bit of the software to virtually do the same thing. Nice one, folks. Thanks:-)

Lots of great stuff here. Should be required reading for Vista-bashers who say the OS brings nothing new or worthwhile to the table!

Informative and easily uderstood Thank you

When I bought my computer, it came with Vista Business. I had nothing but problems, trouble, and crashing. I then upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Best decision I could have made! No prob's no trouble, and NO crashes! Glory be to God, cuz I'm a senior, and making changes are not good, usually, but I'm glad I made this one.
