Windows Vista Gadgets - The good, the bad and the ugly

James Stables lists the best and the worst of Microsoft's handy new gadgets
By James Stables on 30 January 2007

Finally something has come to fill the vacant void that lurks on the right-hand side of the desktop - that forbidden expanse where nothing has dared to go before.

Windows Vista’s new Sidebar enables you to make your desktop both functional and fun. At the moment mine looks like the central computer console of a Federation starship, with dials, meters and flashing lights everywhere.

Here are my five most useful (and most pointless) Sidebar gadgets:

MOST USEFUL…

BBC RADIO

If you like to listen to music while you work, and are bored of Media Player, then you can add BBC Radio to the Sidebar. Choose from all the Beeb’s digital stations, including the fantastic 6 Music.

WIKIPEDIA

I’m a self-confessed Wikipedia addict, and this gadget makes it so easy to search, I wept little tears of knowledge when I first tried it out.

NOTEPAD

Having a memory like a grape used to be a problem for me. Not any more. Write down everything from meetings to greetings with the handy notepad gadget.

ITN NEWS FEED

The RSS Feed is revolutionising the way we receive news. No longer do we have to go looking for the latest stories, they get beamed straight to our desktop. This handy gadget not only provides you with the full ITN headlines and text, but video and audio as well. There are RSS feeds for most news services now, so get one that suits you.

OUTLOOK INFO

This gadget will save you so much time, and make you feel so clever, you may decide to take a night course in brain surgery. When you can check your inbox, tasks and calendar appointments - all without having to open Outlook - who could blame you?

AND FINALLY, MOST NEEDED… EGG TIMER

We’ve all been there. ‘I’ll just go on the computer for 10 minutes while my dinner cooks.’ Between myspace and your oven, an hour slips by, and dinner looks worse than Gordon Ramsey’s face.

Sidebar Gadgets

A few of the Sidebar gadgets you can try out

MOST POINTLESS…

SNACK

You can add a tasty looking apple to your desktop, and from time to time order a chunk of it to be bitten off. Maybe this is a new way of keeping us slim and healthy, by enjoying a calorie-free virtual snack. Or maybe it’s just there to annoy Apple.

CPU METER

This gadget apparently tells you how occupied the CPU is while you’re working away. However, the only time I’ve been bored enough to bother looking, it shows that the CPU isn’t doing a lot. Funny that.

TERROR ALERT

A second-by-second monitor of the current terror alert status in America is just what I’ve always wanted. Today it was amber, meaning there’s only a medium risk of terrorists blowing everyone to bits.

PULL MY FINGER

When you pull the little finger on the pointing hand, it emits a rather humorous farting noise. This caused much confusion and amusement in the office…once.

PIANO

Maybe this isn’t that pointless. Perhaps Bach and Beethoven started their careers tinkling away on a virtual piano that is operated by mouse-clicking one key at a time. Or maybe not.

All these gadgets and hundreds more are available from Microsoft, and can be searched by going to the ‘add gadget’ screen from the Sidebar, and then clicking ‘Get More Gadgets Online.’

I'm much amused by today's terror level. And the BBC Radio gadget is brilliant. Thanks for pointing them out.

I found it very amusing and informative. Thanks

Personally I think the CPU/RAM meter gadget is great it helps let you know when things are going wrong and if your PC is powerful enough. The notepad gadget is also very useful. The calendar is also good not to mention the analogue clock (you can set it to a different time zone to your regular clock). Google, Wikipedia and the Virtual Earth gadgets are also rather handy.

As usual, you MicroSofters do your thing well, thoughtfully, and pleasantly. Gadgets are all about convenience and ease while parked in my computer chair - thanks for the article!

I would rate this article, right up there with the 10 Most Useful Gadgets. It is not too long, fits nicely into a corner space, and provides utility & knowledge. What else could one look for in a Gadget BLOG? Well... It would have been just a tad more useful if the author expanded his commentary to include (in the 10-Most Pointless) which Gadgets pose the greatest risk to IP security and PC integrity. At some point, VISTA will demand Gadget Watchdogs. Thanks for the piece! Roger

does vista premium have a texas hold em game, if so can somebody point me to it, thank you.
18/02/07 | 04:46

Cant you find it in the download section?
20/02/07 | 01:18
hold 'em is only available with vista ultimate as it is an ultimate extra

Though I live in the US, the BBC gadget will get a workout from me. Due to budget cuts, the BBC no longer beams their shortwave signal to North America, and I miss being able to listen in to the Finest and Bestest News in the World. (Official Testimonial: you may quote that last part of the previous sentence.)

I find almost half of the gadgets fail to work, shutting down the sidebar and wonder if somethings wrong with my machine or are they just poorly made? I also like the ebay gadget and BBC.

You can find another list of useful gadgets here: http://www.vista4beginners.com/7-gadgets-for-your-Windows-Sidebar Some of them are really good.

I find Outlook info to consume a lot of memory over time. Anyone else seen this? Once I removed it from my sidebar, sidebar.exe used half as much memory as when it was active. Then again, can't MS create a cleaner gadget that could be used by the public and supported in the corporate environment? please... ;)

I think the egg timer is a very good idea because otherwise i will always get dissolved into my pc. then my cousin then moans i use much. so cheers :D

Where can the Egg Timer be downloaded from?

CPU meters, especialy those specifically for multi-core CPUs are VERY useful for inerstanding how some programs behave (taking advantage of all cpu-cores etc) and also to see if fan speed control is working properly

I've loaded the weather gadget, although to be honest I could just look out the window to see what is going on! Perhaps I should change it to the weather for sunnier climes ... Where can I get the bubblewrap gadget from?
21/06/07 | 04:32

What about the Babe Slide Show. Takes away from productivity but keeps a smile on my face!

The most useful gadgets for me are the UK Radio player, Systran - for translating languages, Multimetre 4 Core and one of the best and most useful is Magic folder. This one stops the desktop getting crowded as it automatically sends different file types to different folders you specify. So you just drag your file to it and it sends it to the correct folder. Perfect.

I have Vietnam TV on 2 different channels and switch to listen when one has something interesting. I like my desktop active so I have lots going on. I keep my meter running at about half.
