Make your Windows Vista desktop wallpaper look better in five minutes!

Nick Odantzis shows you how to modify icons to make your desktop background look amazing
By NickO on 20 March 2007

You don’t need Windows DreamScene and its fancy animated wallpapers to make your desktop look beautiful. In just a few minutes, you can transform your current static background to look better than ever.

So what do you need to do to carry out this makeover? Well, actually it’s really easy -all you need to do is clean-up your desktop icons, and we’ll show you how in just two simple steps.

This is my current desktop. It’s nice, but those fussy icons are holding it back from looking really good.

Step 1 - Get rid of the ugly arrow

1. Download the Overlay Shortcut Remover tool here

2. Install it to your hard drive

3. Launch the program and select the option to remove the arrow from icons and restart your PC

Once they’re gone, the desktop looks much better, but that text still looks a bit rubbish.

Step 2 - Remove all that unsightly text

1. Right click on an icon

2. Click on Rename

3. Using the number pad on the right-hand side of your keyboard, hold down the ALT key and type in numbers 2, 5 and 5. Don’t worry if you can’t see the numbers coming up underneath the icon; you’re not supposed to.

4. Obviously, you won’t be able to give each icon the same name, so for the next icon on your desktop, you once again rename, but this time type in ALT and 255 twice, and for every other icon, add another ALT and 255, so for the sixth icon, you’ll need to type ALT 255, ALT 255, ALT 255, ALT 255, ALT 255, ALT 255.

It’s a subtle effect, but with all the text now removed from each icon, the background looks clean and smooth.

Intriguing. So Alt 255 hides icon text? Makes me wonder if there are other number codes.

There are other other codes.
One is to right-click the item, click rename, and then Press
Alt 0160

I tried, I recommand ALT 0160

The same trick also works on Windows XP Pro. I've not tried Home.

I think there are. In fact, I'm sure I read somewhere that there were some other codes.

I am on a laptop that doesn't have the number pad. Can I still remove the text from my icons?
23/03/07 | 09:16

You have to press and hold your "Fn" Key to activate the number pad on the keyboard.
01/05/08 | 01:03

Absolutely, and I apologise for not including it.

On a laptop, you need to turn on numlock and use the small number keys next to the letter keys.

Thanks for the help. My desktop looks so much cleaner. I hope you keep posting new tips and tweaks for vista.

Using a Dell 1530 I got this to work. Remember you have to press and hold your "Fn" Key to activate the number pad on the keyboard.

Right Click - Rename
Hold alt
Hold Fn
Enter 255 or 0160 for that matter
Let go of the buttons, press enter

I tried your tip on the renaming, and it works fine for the first icon, but typig ALT 255 255 for the second icon gives me a weird double cross symbol, and it does the same thing for the third, fourth, etc. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks! By the way, I'm on Laptop.
25/03/07 | 07:12

Hi,

Another thing I should have specified - you need to hold down ALT and type 255, and then take your finger off the ALT button and type 255 once again.

Thanks,

Nick

One more thing, the Overlay Shortcut tool isn't working for me either, it keeps giving me an Unhandled Exception every time I click apply.
25/03/07 | 07:20

Scratch the Overlay Shortcut Tool problem, I got it to work. I just said I didn't want to log off when I applied
(which is what gave me the error), than logged off manually.
25/03/07 | 07:31

same thing happaned for me also!!!!!What is the soloution for this problem
22/05/07 | 02:37
Yea i had to manually log off also. But thanks anyway it ended up working.

My Toshiba Satelite won't accept the name change. There's no numlock either. Any suggestions?
04/04/07 | 10:41

Hold the Fn key.
01/05/08 | 01:08
Hold the Fn key.
01/05/08 | 01:08

My HP Notebook is without a num lock as well. Suggestions appreciated
06/04/07 | 01:11

I have a feeling you need to press the Fn and F11 keys siumultaneously, which should turn on the numlock overlay. To turn it off, you simply do this again. If this doesn't work, it may tell you how to do it in your manual.
06/04/07 | 08:38

Y64 the...opps Forgot to turn off FN/f11 You're the man! Laptop looks so peaceful, I appreciate it @ the end of the day.
07/04/07 | 01:27

Having said that, I tried it today and holding down the Fn key whilst pressing one of the numbered keys was sufficient to make it work.
06/04/07 | 05:51

In XP I simply turned off the desktop display, and turned on the Desktop toolbar. I then moved the tool bar to the right side of the screen and turned on autohide. But so far Vista does not "seem" to permit moving toolbars to another location, either that or I have not found the magic word:)
06/04/07 | 08:43

Fantastic Tool!! If you are having trouble with the keyboard us the onscreen keyboard, you have to key in alt 255 then deselect ALT and then select alt 255 again, and again, etc. /All Programs/Accessories/Ease of Access/On-screen keyboard or control Panel/Ease of Access/Ease of Access Center/Start On-Screen Keyboard I've been wondering when someone would think of this twek, and it was there all along!
07/04/07 | 02:08
In answer to John_W
I have just right clicked the toolbar clicked lock the taskbar then dragged the toolbar to the side of the screen the gadgetbar just moved to the left slightly to make room
to auto hide rightclick the toolbar then select properties for that option
Hope this helps

Thanks. Can you tell me how to put text back. Seems that once I do this, I cannot delete a folder renamed using this technique ;-)
07/04/07 | 07:19

To remove the label from icons, can't you just Rename then press 'Space'??? Worked for me! Isn't ALT 255 basically Extended ASCII for 'Space'? Very good tips though, never thought of doing it before reading this, looks much better!

I'm on a laptop and it worked great !!! Thanks!!!!
10/04/07 | 08:35

It certainly looks great but why are the icons so big.... smaller is better in my eyes
13/04/07 | 12:51

For smaller Icons, Right click the desktop, Select View and Classic Icons.
25/04/07 | 06:20
You don't have to have them that big. I simply made them that size because a) I wanted to clearly highlight the difference, and b) I like the look :O)
25/04/07 | 07:41

For smaller Icons,
Right click the desktop,
Select View and Classic Icons.

Sorry about all the duplicates,
It looks like they all went through.
26/04/07 | 08:41

I seemed to be having the same problem too. By the way, there's an easier way to change the size of the desktop icons. Just hold down CTRL and use the mouse scroll wheel to adjust the size up or down.
26/04/07 | 09:10

Useful tip for resizing the desktop icons quickly and simply, thanks!

How do you rename so you can delete folder. It acts like Windows can't delete because it does no know the name of the file to delete.
30/04/07 | 05:34

can this not be done on a laptop?
