Watch Star Wars using a hidden trick in Windows Vista

Hidden secret unlocks a text version of Star Wars onto your desktop
By James Stables on 20 May 2008

Fans of hidden secrets in Windows operating systems will doubtlessly be aware of the hidden Star Wars movie in the Telnet service.

Despite the trick being well documented in previous versions of Windows, if you've been trying to find it in Windows Vista, you may have ended up a little lost.

Rotate

The problem is that by default Telnet is turned off, so to enable it go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows Features on or off, then select both Telnet tick boxes.

Now it’s switched on close the windows and start search ‘Telnet’ and hit enter.

In the command prompt which follows type ‘o’, hit enter, and then ‘towel.blinkenlights.nl’.

Rotate

Sit back and enjoy your own personal rendition of Star Wars.

I'm sorry but what exactly does this have to do with Windows? You've got us telnetting to a remote server in the Netherlands which can be done on any operating system. This is hardly any sort of Windows-based easter egg.

The first line of the post is "Fans of hidden secrets". To me, that is the equivalent of an easter egg; a hidden feature in something. This is neither hidden in Windows, nor a feature of Windows. It's a telnet session to a remote server, something that can be done in any OS out there.
